Valentine’s Day is a week away and a great opportunity for blessing our children. Naturally every day we can and should express love for them, yet we all know that next week holds a significant time.
Celebrations don’t need to be elaborate or complicated, I’m learning. Children appreciate and respond well to simplicity.
So today I share a few ideas for celebrating ‘the day of love’ with little ones.
“Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” Charles R. Swindoll
~ Catch them doing good! Affirm their acts of kindness by writing it down. Cut out heart shapes from construction paper or cardstock and over the course of several days, watch for the ways your children obey, do good, or otherwise just choose the right thing! Write each one on a heart and make it visible by placing where the children will see :: on their bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, their bedroom door.
~ Mail them a letter. Children love receiving mail and what a sweet way to celebrate Valentine’s by heading to the mailbox and finding a note from Mom or Dad!
~ have a special snuggle time on the couch with each child :: verbally remind them of your unconditional love for them, based on who they are, not just what they do (or don’t).
~ make them an ‘I love you because…’ poster. Just an 8×11 cardstock sheet with reasons of why you love and appreciate this particular kiddo. Decorate with stickers or other, laminate if you wish and even use as a placemat! This could also be made on the computer and printed out. Be creative and have fun with it.
The idea is to pause and celebrate our children’s lives and their place in our family.
Make memories.
