This year I’ve got a serious plan to put away food ~ a lot of food, as much seasonal produce as I can! So, with bags still unpacked from our vacation, the children and I headed out to a friend’s strawberry patch to pick…and pick and pick. In reality there is still quite a bit of jam from last year and we didn’t take home that much. These berries will be used for smoothies and pies I think. I’m hoping to do asparagus and broccoli soon. Yum.
A great online resource for freezing and canning just about anything is Pick Your Own (with lots of pictures for the visual learner!) How about you—putting any food by?
I'm with you, I'm on a mission to put by as much food as I can as well.
To answer your question, I have an American Harvest dehydrator, now made by Nesco. I used my grandmother's 20+year old dehydrator for many years until it died just last year. I purchased a newer version so I could still use the old trays. It works great, I love it.
One of these days, I'll get an Excalibur dehydrator. They are considered the top of the line. They are a bit pricey, so I'll have to save up.
Ooooo…you're reminding me to act fast on strawberries. There's a U-Pick place down the road. I've got to get them before they're gone!
I've never canned, nor have I ever dehydrated anything, as Ann@His Grace To Me wrote in the above comment.
But I do have a nice deep freeze and have frozen fresh-picked strawberries for smoothies.
Thanks for the inspiration and great photographs!
is this at mary's? i went there the other week and got no help from the boys- they played with the calves and in the dirt! oh well, at least they were occupied so i could get what we needed 🙂
Ann K–yes, go and get those strawberries!
Sherry, yes…this is Mary's patch. I snapped pictures while the kiddos were inspired as it didn't last long (a hot day wore them out!)
Ann@His Grace–thanks for the info!!
