DIY elderberry syrup :: plus other natural cold & flu remedies

Ever wonder why you made such a big fuss about something…

…which turned out to be really simple after all?

This is my story of making elderberry syrup!

As much as possible, I try to use natural remedies in caring for sicknesses and general illnesses.

Modern healthcare definitely holds a place in this home, and still, our family has experienced great results of healing our bodies without too many external interventions.  I’m an advocate for a natural remedy whenever possible!

Last year, I wanted to make this simply elderberry syrup.

It just slipped my mind honestly, but I also avoided tackling the recipe (may I remind you it is really, really simple!?)  Far more complicated meals or entrees have been conquered in my kitchen!

Anyway, last week, the making of elderberry syrup found its way into my schedule…and voila!  Syrup for days.

Well, at least for a few weeks.

According to the book Healing Foods by DK, elderberries

  • help fight colds and the flu
  • strengthen immunity
  • may help relieve lung and nasal congestion
  • serve as a gentle detox (mild diuretic effect)

You can find elderberry syrup over the counter, but it can be quite expensive for a small bottle.

This YouTube video below outlines the simple ingredients needed to make your own syrup:

I purchased an 8 oz package of dried elderberries from Mountain Rose Herbs, used local honey from a friend, and the fresh ginger, cinnamon and whole cloves are grocery items.

In total, I spent less than $12.00 to make about 32 ounces of syrup.  Where I live, an 8 oz bottle costs around $9-$12 depending on the brand.  The recipe can also use fresh elderberries by increasing the quantity.

The children will take about 1/2 Tbsp per day, and I plan about 1 Tbsp; this is not a recommended dose, just our own family plan! 🙂

LOVE elderberry syrup! At the first sign of sickness I make a batch and my girls have a teaspoon every hour or so. After discovering this and implementing its use in our home, my girls each had only one ear infection within the 5 years of using it…and those ear infections were after 4 years of use! Of course I discovered elderberry syrup right after my oldest had tubes in her ears, but luckily it saved my youngest from having tubes, which was being recommended.ReplyCancel
