52 Ways for More Serenity in Life and Home :: ignore negativity (week #30)

52 Ways for More Serenity in Life and Home :: ignore negativity (week #30)

July is wrapping up, and I’m switching gears to prep for fuller days ahead.  September is usually a slight jolt as we readjust to new routines.

But, summer is still here!

We still take most of our days slowly (it’s been the theme of this season), and will plan to squeeze in as much time outdoors as possible.

Yes, this is a good plan…

Week #30  Ignore Negativity

There is a strong difference between comments from those who know us, who love us…

…who are invested in our well-being and futures somehow, and those who are simply expressing their current opinion of the day.

Oh yes, we are a talkative bunch, we humans.  We love to have a say!

Sometimes it’s helpful when I receive input, questions or honest evaluations from others.  This didn’t always come easily to me —

I’d call myself a redeemed perfectionist :).

I like to get it right the first time and have those around pleased with my progress.  While there’s much to learn, through life and leadership I’ve grown in understanding how the perspectives (and corrections) of others can truly be a blessing.

At times.

For there are unfortunately those in your life which may simply complain about, criticize, tear at and even hate you.  I know…a harsh reality, but sometimes true. Especially if you take a stand, this is kind of inevitable.

Negativity – unlike helpful and hope-filled talk – is better off ignored.

Streams of negative talk is so damaging to our spirits and doesn’t deserve our time.  If it comes from within us or around us, either way, it will rob us of significant peace!

There are those whose opinions and thoughts must matter (the ones I mentioned last week); we are wise to give attention here.

Then there will be opinions we must intentionally disregard (the definition of ignore).    Easier said than done, but it will lead to more peace over time.

:

Action Plan:  If there is negative chatter you need to place boundaries on, consider just how to go about this.  Less time with an individual or group?  Less attention given to their words?  Replace instead with encouraging words & truth – scripture, reminders of truth, etc.

I liked the article you linked to…such great advice. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be someone being negative toward me to stress me out. I almost feel personally attacked by someone insulting the blogger I’m reading and his/her opinions, or people fighting on message boards. It’s so silly; it’s not even real life nor does it personally concern me. I need to have the discipline to tune it out or turn it off.ReplyCancel

Great post! My problem lately is that the negativity comes in the way of Facebook messages. What is in print is so hard for me to ignore. I have archived those messages and even blocked some from being able to message me. One in particular will message or call my husband if she cannot get to me. This causes much turmoil and I have started to feel like I will never be free of it. In this instance prayer is my only answer.ReplyCancel
