52 Ways for More Serenity in Life and Home :: budget your time (week #17)

Remember the fabulous homemaking ebook sale I mentioned last week?

Well, it begins today (9 a.m. EST)!

There’s a whole library of ebooks and resources to equip and encourage the Christian homemaker.  I am honored to have my ebook on rest in the bundle and to also own all of the others.

We’ll chat about a few resources and highlights of this bundle over the next few days.  Come back because I’m giving away a bundle and the FREE $140 worth of products from various companies later on this week!

For now, let’s talk serenity in life….

Week #17 Learn to Budget your Time

This concept of applying a budgeting mentality to time wasn’t one I had really ever considered.

Time is the great equalizer.  Regardless of how much income, or status, or leverage we have in other areas…the same 24 hours is allotted to us all.  Because of the limited nature, we are wise to discern how best to divide up our hours and days.

Time management or ‘time budgeting’ is the idea that we give our best time to the most important, NOT the most urgent.  It’s not living by some stringent schedule (yikes)!

This takes understanding what is truly important to us in this season.  You must have a handle on what to say yes to and generally how much time will be given to these pursuits.

That’s a time budget!

I am sometimes complimented on how much I get done or how I seem to manage so much!  I smile and say thank you or email a note.  I’m truly appreciative.

But, I often think there is so much more I’m saying NO to!  It’s an exchange for the small but highly important list of YESes I want to engage in.

For example, in this current season of life, I choose not to budget time for:

  • watching television – not because I think it’s bad, it’s simply not a priority
  • scrapbooking & memory albums – the blog replaced this!
  • lots of extra hobbies – a few years ago I narrowed it down to writing, cooking and photography
  • reading magazines or newspapers
  • deep cleaning on a regular basisremember I like this? 🙂  But, clean enough is fine!
  • talking on the phone – most communication is via email
  • couponing all year around – only in the summer, if at all
  • and much more!

How about you – are you in need of readjusting your time budget?

We are all operating by one whether intentional or not.  Our time is being spent on areas of life we may want it to be or not.

With a little effort and prayerful thought, you can learn to take the gift of time and place it to where you would like it to go.  Again, this isn’t about a strict schedule, it’s about making sure the important finds place in our days.

: :

Action Plan:  Maybe over the next few weeks keep a loose journal of how your days are spent — this way you’ll have a general idea of where your time is going.  Use this to evaluate if changes need to be made.

More to Read:  Tell Your Time – the book that introduced me to the idea of time budgeting!  Short, simple and a step-by-step plan to figuring out all I just wrote above! 🙂  And this week….it’s part of the homemaking ebook bundle!

I just finished reading your e-book “Honoring the Rhythm of Rest”. It was such a source of encouragement to me during a very exhausting season. While I knew that I needed to figure out a way to “refill”, your book helped me figure out the best ways to do that, and I’m going to talk to my husband about us both prioritizing daily, weekly and yearly pauses. Thank you for your ministry!ReplyCancel
