19 years and counting… a marriage sustained by Christ

19 years and counting… a marriage sustained by Christ

Today is our 19th wedding anniversary….

While we’re not famous for having 19 kids in 19 years (completely okay with me!), and probably only a handful of our 400+ wedding guests would even remember our important day…

…today is special and significant to my husband and I, and honestly, this is what matters most.

I cannot pretend to understand the mystery of marriage enough to explain, but I am certain of one thing:

Sustaining the core of a godly marriage is Christ, and Christ alone.

::

If we assume our good works, our good deeds keep marriage alive — not only is pride alive and well within us, but we just might be blindsided when bumps come.  And the bumps always come…

Pursuing a God-centered covenant with my spouse is an act of faith.

Two sinners desperately in need of grace, chasing after ideals and often falling short — how could we do this alone?   I am lost without the guidance of One bigger, stronger, more faithful than I.

Today, I am grateful for a God not stunned by our weaknesses as married couples, amen?  These 19 years stand as testimony of God’s ability WITHIN our frailty.

Jesus, thank you…

Today, I am also overwhelmingly grateful for this man I am honored to love and serve.

He is not without fault, but I’ve stopped chasing perfect — in myself or in him.

This change of perspective makes all the difference!  Without the weight of always striving but never actually getting ‘there’, God has worked MUCH in our relationship.

Nineteen years ago, friends sang Michael English’s In Christ Alone for our wedding, right at the unity candle portion of the service.  Taking creative license, we changed the words some to reflect unity in our marriage because of Christ.

These words have always held deep meaning for me, but today — especially after last year’s tremendous stress and struggles

I hold them close, and sing with my whole heart (subscribers, video on the blog):

Our version:

In Christ alone will we glory,

though we could pride ourselves in battles won.

For we’ve been blessed beyond measure

and by His strength alone we’ve overcome.

Oh, we could stop and count successes like diamonds in our hands.

But those trophies could not equal to the GRACE by which we stand.

In Christ alone, we place our trust

and find our glory in the power of the Cross

In every victory, we’ll say in UNITY

…our source of strength, our source of hope,

is Christ alone.

In Christ alone will we glory

for only by His grace we’ve been redeemed

And only His tender mercy could reach

beyond our weakness to our need.

Now, we seek no great honor, than just to know Him more.

And to count our gains but losses to the glory of our Lord!

    Blessings!
Congratulations on your Anniversary! In these times, 19 years is a record. However, I do believe if more emphasis were put on what to expect in marriage, more pre- marital counseling, and learn what your to be spouse’s love language is,(not original with me), there would be less divorces and more understanding realizing that not any two people are alike. Also, no one is perfect. So in conclusion, I see marriage as a lifetime commitment to an imperfect person. Unconditional love and forgiveness are key. My husband and I will be married 50 years in 2016 life sparing us. Again,CONGRATULATIONS!ReplyCancel

This is such a wonderful testimony of God’s grace. The enemy does not want Christian marriages to last, but you have submitted your marriage to the Lord, and he has been faithful! Some do not understand that love is not just a feeling, it is a commandment. Husbands love your wives; wives obey your husbands. You have done the work in the spirit and 19 years later you remain. God is good!ReplyCancel
